RCA Victor 8-Tracks

RCA Victor initially released 175 8-track tape cartridges as part of the drive to put 8-track players into cars and homes in September 1965. They are listed below by ascending catalog number within series with artist and title information.  The listings are from the RCA Victor cartridge tapes catalog 9136/865.  Refer to that 16 page catalog for complete listing information.  192 listings are included here as the catalog also had 17 additional future releases.  These tapes are great for car show display inside an RCA cartridge caddy with the related auto demonstration tape.   

The tapes were packaged in a plastic 2 piece clamshell like lined white tub with a clear slide top. The cartridges were a Lear Jet flat pak design with mustard colored front labels.  Production ink stamps were located on the cartridge back tops and some had a circular RCA lightning bolt emblem stamped into the lower cartridge back. A red circular one year warranty seal sticker was attached to the slide and tub to seal it. Packaged with the tapes were warranty and red temperature extreme warning inserts. Some original cast and sound track tapes had an additional insert related to the production.  Twin-packs were double LP equivalents.  Based on catalog series, nationally advertised prices were from $4.95 to $10.95.  With inflation, that is equivalent to today's purchasing power of approximately $46.00 to $100.00.

Today, most of these tape survivors are unplayable due to deteriorated or melted rollers and tension issues. They need to be serviced before playing with new rollers, splices and tension adjustments.  Higher end home players with strong motors and new belts are recommended for playing twin-packs due to jamming from longer tape lengths of up to 80 minutes.  Many of these tapes were separated from their tubs over the years and the complete package is now collectible.  For example, the Elvis Presley tapes P8S-1018, P8S-1019 and P8S-1057.  

Note that 13 catalog numbers are missing when reviewing the consecutive catalog numbers within series.  They are P8S-1003, P8S-1033, P8S-1039,  P8S-5006 , P8S-5009, P8S-5020, P8S-5025, R8S-1022, R8S-5005, R8S-5008, R8S-5012, C8S-5001 and C8S-5005.   The related tapes may have never been manufactured or were for demonstration/not for sale purposes.
